Year 6 went to visit the Durham Oriental Museum as part of our topic on Japan. We had a fantastic day with John, our guide, whose enthusiasm and knowledge inspired both our children and our staff to really engage with the day. We found out such a lot about the culture and tradition of Japan – notably the impact of the Japanese culture of the Samurai warrior on the Star Wars films (did you know that Darth Vader is wearing a Samurai helmet or that Obi-Wan Kenobi is named after the belt around his kimono?).

We had an opportunity to make some seasonal scrolls and to find out about a tea ceremony. We also found out how to demonstrate respect as a Samurai and how to fight and defend with a sword (many thanks to Phil the Samurai). We had an excellent day and would certainly recommend the museum for a day out. If parents are reading this, your children would love to take you to the Oriental Museum and become your guide!

The children’s behaviour was, as always, absolutely fantastic. We were very proud and had a lovely day.
