On Thursday Year 5 had a fantastic day at the National Glass Centre at Sunderland. In the morning we were led around the ‘Facade’ exhibition which explores the use of glass in building design. The children were given shapes which could be found in the exhibition and these became the inspiration for their mosaic glass tiles which were then made in the workshop.
Before lunch we watched a glass blowing demonstration – Jamie had a great go at it!
The children drew a design on paper and then a transparent glass tile was placed over it. They reproduced the drawn design by sticking tiny pieces of coloured glass on the tile. When the design was created in coloured glass, a second transparent glass tile was placed on top. Finally, the completed tile had to be fired in a kiln and left to cool.
